Rather than attempt a full listing of our own, we have provided links to other listings we believe to be both accurate and self-explanatory. These apply to the world’s major religious groups. For a record of special days for other religions, you should use the Interfaith Calendar link listed in the first section below.

We have also included, where considered relevant, some details about the individual religions/beliefs. These indicate that there are often multiple groups within individual religions, e.g. Christianity.

The following covers information about religious days and festivals for various faiths, held throughout the year. The small number of links in the first section of each religion’s listing provides a basic background to that religion.

    ‘The Islamic calendar [known as the Hijri calendar] is a purely lunar calendar. It contains 12 months that are based on the cycle of the moon. Because 12 synodic months are only 12 x 29.53 = 354.36 days, the Islamic calendar is consistently shorter than a solar year, it therefore shifts approximately 11 days every year with respect to the Gregorian calendar’.
