 TEACHERS

The definition of a teacher as “a person who teaches, especially in a school” [Oxford Dictionaries] is only a basic representation of the many aspects of a teacher’s career and life.

Teacher training now involves more specific requirements than in the past. Becoming employed is now a different process and it often takes much longer to attain a permanent appointment.

Many teachers spend time in either a casual or part-time basis before gaining a permanent position. This beginning period for teachers remains crucial both for them and their retention within the system. Assessment of their progress and professional development across many areas is continuous.

Many remain in the classroom, but other options exist within the system. Some specialise in areas such as the Library or special education while others pursue leadership positions. Others travel to different parts of the world to experience new cultures and systems. Individuals can make their own way. Others use exchange programs.
